China's ISS Competitor Begins Construction In Orbit

Vitenskap og teknologi

Yesterday China's Long March 5 carried the first module of their space station into orbit, a 20 ton module derived from the Russian DOS designs, which will be the core of a much larger 60 ton orbital facility able to host astronauts for months at a time.

but there’s a reason why us-china space relations are not that easy... most current one: this launch again showed carelessness; china did basically mess up there lower stages and now nobody knows where they are going to crash because of uncontrolled reentry... it might be nothing but with a more caring ascend trajectory the risk could have been minimized greatly vs. the “i do what i want mentality”... :(

What can be observed: 1) Tianhe is based on DOS modules, but it's clearly longer in every segment than Zvezda for example. 2) Internally Tianhe is more of a copy of US segments. 3) Wentian and Mengtian modules design highly rezembles the design of not yet flown Science and Energy modules (NEMs) that new Russian space station (ROSS) is going to use, but again they are slightly longer. 4) The algorythm of docking to the front adapter of the station and then move module to one of the ports with an arm is based on Mir construction. Mir too had small robotic arms (or rather rotatig poles with an attachment point), to move modules to the correct node after initial docking. 5) Also the way it's assembled and moved (vertically) is more of American way to do things, while in Russia the facilities are much more modest and all the operations are done horizontally. I'd say Chinese staion is basically Mir core, with Destiny internals, and two NEMs from proposed ROSS station with all modules being larger than russian counterparts. It's interesting that ROSS doesn't actually have DOS core anymore and proposed to have only two NEMs, which makes Tianhe the only successor to DOS design.

  • dramaticus flatudicus

    dramaticus flatudicus

    Dag siden

Correct assessment. You could say the ROSS still has elements from the DOS program overall, if you include the FGB (and therefore TKS): origins being of a much larger FGB with a multi docking port. Retain only the multi docking port and you are left with Prichal, the Uzlovoy Module that will attach to Nauka, and post ISS operations form the new core of the ROSS. In terms of realising the shortcomings of the monolithic DOS design, the static core with replaceable DOS-like modules makes more sense for long term maintenance, repair and replacement considerations. - Revolution Baby! :P
